Cardijn College approached us after acquiring the Marcellin Technical College to rework how the campus presented on its prominent Beach Road boundary.
No access or obvious entrance meant there was no presence to the high-profile thoroughfare. This set the underlying brief for the creation of a campus entry statement.
Our design gave the college prominence on Beach Road, and provided intuitive wayfinding to the admin building, which faces the side road.
We worked closely with Council through master planning to achieve an outcome that improved the streetscape, vehicular movement and carparking, and student safety.
Utilising the existing landscape, we framed a statement gum tree with a stone feature wall. Permeable paving was used to ensure a quality of paved surface, while maintaining healthy soil conditions for the tree.
The stone walling was repeated inside the campus grounds for seating, with generous sloped lawns for students to relax on, and low maintenance plantings throughout. All of this helped to soften the hard-edged nature of the existing architecture.
Existing paths were widened and softened to improve pedestrian flow.
Custom screening, fences and gates, and new signage bring life to tired architecture, and purpose to unused spaces.
